Redemption Children's Home
Redemption Children's Home is a small, privately run orphanage in Damongo, which is in the Northern Region of Ghana, West Africa. It was founded in 2004 by a Ghanaian man named Abraham Saaka Lermu. The home first started when Abraham took over the care for two small children, whose mother's had died during childbirth. Now, over ten years down the road, there are close to 50 children living under the care of Redemption Children's Home.
The main purpose of Redemption Children's Home is to care for orphaned, abandoned and destitute children, giving them love and support no matter what their background may be. Abraham also provides for a few children who are living with HIV/AIDS. The most notable thing about this orphanage, though, is that they are basically one big family. They all take care of each other and the kids even call Abraham "Daddy."
Additionally, Abraham has started a primary school on the premises of the orphanage, which is open to the children throughout the entire community of Damongo. This is very special because it means that the children living in the orphanage get to interact with other kids in the community.
Damongo is in the Northern Region of Ghana, which is about a 16 hour drive from Accra. Most people (mainly tourists) travel up north to visit the Mole Game Reserve, which is home to hundreds of elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, and leopards. Because Damongo is so secluded, there are limited resources within the town. As a result Abraham makes weekly journeys to the nearest city, which takes about two hours one way.
Connections with attorneys and agents at the regional Department of Social Welfare are required to finalize adoptions. This poses a particular problem to Redemption Children's Home because of its seclusion. Each region of Ghana has its own Department of Social Welfare (DSW). The DSW that is assigned to the Northern Region (i.e. where RCH is located) is in Kumasi, which is more than a 10-hour bus ride from Damongo. This makes it extremely difficult to obtain the proper documentation needed in order for the children to be adopted. As of 2018 only one child has been adopted out of RCH.
